Install the extension
CLI first, then the editor. Publisher luca-ecosystem.
- Install the
lucaCLI first (install guide), then checkluca --versionworks in a terminal. - Marketplace (recommended): search “Luca Code” in the Extensions view and select Install.
- Packaged file (before publication): package it from source (needs Node.js 20+, no dependencies to install), then use the Extensions view menu option Install from VSIX and pick the generated file:
cd editors/vscode npx @vscode/vsce packageThis creates
luca-code-1.0.0.vsix. Open any.luccfile — keywords should be highlighted.
Use it
Starter files, one-click runs, inline diagnostics, snippets.
- New Luca File — creates a starter program via the Luca commands in the command menu.
- Run Luca File — saves and runs the file, also available as a run button in the editor title bar when a
.luccfile is open. By default it runs in the integrated terminal (a shared “Luca” terminal), so output appears where you already look — and programs usingaskcan read your typing. - Set
luca.runInTerminalto off to run in the Output panel on the Luca Code channel instead, which turnsError at line:column:andWarning at line:column:output into inline diagnostics in the editor. Error at line:column:andWarning at line:column:output becomes inline diagnostics; the first error also pops up with its location.- Snippets: type
try,error,raise,func,if,for,while,ask,import, orprintand confirm the completion.
If the extension cannot find Luca
You will see: “the ‘luca’ CLI was not found.” Two fixes.
- Put
lucaon yourPATH(the installer does this; see troubleshooting), restart VS Code, and run again, or - Set the
luca.cliPathsetting to the absolute path of the binary (Settings → search “Luca Code”, or add"luca.cliPath": "/Users/you/.cargo/bin/luca"in user settings JSON).
Upgrade and uninstall
Extension, CLI, and clean removal.
- Upgrade the extension: install the newer packaged file the same way (VS Code replaces it), or update from the Marketplace once published.
- Upgrade the CLI: re-run the installer (install guide).
- Uninstall the extension: Extensions view → Luca Code → Uninstall. Uninstall the CLI: see the uninstall step.
